The ‘Qipao’ – also known as the cheongsam - is a traditional Chinese dress that is known for its high-neck and close-fitting silhouette. We’ve given the Qipao a modern update with a shorter length and pleated tassel detailing. Traditionally a dress won by high society women, the Qipao dates to the Late Qing dynasty.
The Tea Silk fabric gives the dress a luxurious finish for the perfect special occasion look. Tea silk or 'xiang yun sha' (which translates as ‘fragrant cloud organdy’), is silk which has been through a complicated natural dye process with traditions that date back to the Ming Dynasty (14th – 17th century), when it was considered to be the most luxurious fabric. The right shoulder features transparent sheer silk to add a contemporary feel to this traditional silhouette. It pays homage to the heritage of the Qipao while offering a more chic and wearable style for the modern woman.
What makes this Qipao dress unique is that features the ‘Three Friends of Winter’ embroidery. In Chinese, these are the pine tree, bamboo and plum blossom (松，竹，梅). These plants are famous for growing in the face of winter’s adversity and represent the strength that every woman has within them.
You can style our interpretation of the Qipao with our Yanxi Embroidered Coat for your next special occasion. Its feminine silhouette and intricate detailing make it a piece of living art that you’ll wear for years to come.
